Altar and Sacrifices Restored

Now when the seventh month came, and (A)the sons of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered together as one man to Jerusalem. Then (B)Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brothers the priests, and (C)Zerubbabel the son (D)of Shealtiel and his brothers arose and (E)built the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings on it, (F)as it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God. So they set up the altar on its foundation, for [a](G)they were terrified because of the peoples of the lands; and they (H)offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, burnt offerings morning and evening. They celebrated the (I)Feast of [b]Booths, (J)as it is written, and offered [c]the fixed number of burnt offerings daily, (K)according to the ordinance, as each day required; and afterward there was a (L)continual burnt offering, also (M)for the new moons and (N)for all the fixed festivals of the Lord that were consecrated, and from everyone who offered a freewill offering to the Lord. From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, but the foundation of the temple of the Lord had not been laid. Then they gave money to the masons and carpenters, and (O)food, drink and oil to the Sidonians and to the Tyrians, (P)to bring cedar wood from Lebanon to the sea at (Q)Joppa, according to the permission they had [d]from (R)Cyrus king of Persia.

Temple Restoration Begun

Now in the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem in the second month, (S)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all who came from the captivity to Jerusalem, began the work and (T)appointed the Levites from twenty years and older to oversee the work of the house of the Lord. Then (U)Jeshua with his sons and brothers stood united with Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of [e]Judah and the sons of Henadad with their sons and brothers the Levites, to oversee the workmen in the temple of God.

10 Now when the builders had (V)laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, [f]the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord (W)according to the [g]directions of King David of Israel. 11 (X)They sang, praising and giving thanks to the Lord, saying, “(Y)For He is good, for His lovingkindness is upon Israel forever.” And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12 Yet many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, (Z)the old men who had seen the first [h]temple, wept with a loud voice when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, while many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the shout of joy from the sound of the weeping of the people, for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the sound was heard far away.

Warnings and Instructions

27 (A)Do not boast about tomorrow,
For you (B)do not know what a day may bring forth.
Let (C)another praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips.
A stone is heavy and the sand weighty,
But the provocation of a fool is heavier than both of them.
Wrath is fierce and anger is a flood,
But (D)who can stand before jealousy?
Better is (E)open rebuke
Than love that is concealed.
Faithful are the (F)wounds of a friend,
But [a]deceitful are the (G)kisses of an enemy.

God’s Final Word in His Son

God, after He (A)spoke long ago to the fathers in (B)the prophets in many portions and (C)in many ways, [a](D)in these last days (E)has spoken to us [b]in (F)His Son, whom He appointed (G)heir of all things, (H)through whom also He made the [c](I)world. [d]And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact (J)representation of His nature, and [e](K)upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made (L)purification of sins, He (M)sat down at the right hand of the (N)Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent (O)name than they.

For to which of the angels did He ever say,

(P)You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You”?

And again,

(Q)I will be a Father to Him
And He shall be a Son to Me”?

And [f]when He again (R)brings the firstborn into [g](S)the world, He says,

(T)And let all the angels of God worship Him.”

And of the angels He says,

(U)Who makes His angels winds,
And His ministers a flame of fire.”

But of the Son He says,

(V)Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
And the righteous scepter is the scepter of [h]His kingdom.
(W)You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
(X)Therefore God, Your God, has (Y)anointed You
With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”

10 And,

(Z)You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the works of Your hands;
11 (AA)They will perish, but You remain;
(AB)And they all will become old like a garment,
12 (AC)And like a mantle You will roll them up;
Like a garment they will also be changed.
But You are (AD)the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.”

13 But to which of the angels has He ever said,

(AE)Sit at My right hand,
(AF)Until I make Your enemies
A footstool for Your feet”?

14 Are they not all (AG)ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will (AH)inherit (AI)salvation?
